16-22 June is Refugee Week, and we're marking it by highlighting a fantastic FREE new resource created by our friends at Music Action International, who took part in our research project into singing for displaced young people in the UK. Over to you guys....

Thanks Sing Up Foundation! We at Music Action International deliver an award-winning national schools programme, Harmonise, increasing the well-being of children and building understanding towards refugees, safety seekers and Roma people with children and communities of all backgrounds. Our professional refugee musicians share their stories, and create amazing music and dance moves together with children and young people in the classroom.
This Refugee Week, where the culture, contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary are celebrated, our Harmonise performances will take place in schools, local community venues and prestigious venues such as The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester and Barbican Centre, London.
“Harmonise increases the well-being of all children in the classroom by up to 250%”

New Music Resources available for KS2, KS3 EAL and Refugee Week Activities in the Classroom

To help teachers to explore the cultures, languages and music of refugees, we are excited to share our Music Resources for Refugee Week and beyond. Use this pack in your classroom to fulfil KS2 & KS3 Music, PSHE, Geography and Language curriculum areas, while learning about different refugee cultures through games and songs!
By working in this way young people are introduced to refugees as people first, with interesting and fun things to share. A safe space is created for young people with refugee heritage or lived experience of displacement, with our facilitators acting as important role models celebrating and sharing their own cultural backgrounds.
What’s in the pack?: tutorial videos, backing tracks and lyrics created by professional musicians from around the world sharing their favourite songs in Farsi, Arabic, Lingala, Bosnian, Swahili, Zulu, Urdu and more…
For those teachers new to music-making in the classroom, the pack is filled with online tutorials in techniques to increase wellbeing in the classroom including beat-boxing, body percussion, games and singing exercises.
Gol e Gandom with Roshi: Roshi’s favourite song: Gol e Gandom
Using our expertise from years delivering Harmonise, we will be creating more FREE Music Resources with songs and games from Sudan, Syria, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan and more.. If there is a language not included in our resource, let us know and we will create one for that language!

We will also be organising Teachers’ CPD events, to accompany this Teachers' Pack, with trauma-informed games, activities and ways to discuss the topic of refugees in the classroom, curated by educators and musicians with lived experience. Using these resources and trauma-informed practice in the classroom can help schools contribute to a more welcoming and compassionate society.
